Hope you all enjoyed the first use of this venue, with its combination of forest roads, singletrack and firebreaks, historic moorland tracks and monuments, and valley bridleways. Weather conditions made the best of it. Our first visit to the forest last December found us wading through several firebreaks. Putting controls out on Friday I found the same firebreaks were 75% ridable, and when taking controls in found that the passage of 100 riders had improved them even further .
Organisationally, the event was a bit of a nightmare, as we had to move the event centre on the Friday. This explains the two start triangles on the map and the scarcity of signage and portaloos, so apologies in retrospect for that. SportIdent scoring does make many aspects of the event organisation so much easier, and hopefully more of you think it worthwhile to buy your own dibber; if you do then please let us know the number beforehand.
As you would expect from a top orienteer, Chris Wright did a through job of planning and made you all think about route choice. Once again, the number of map corrections and markings shows that we are nearing the limit of scissor+glue+pen technology for producing these maps, and I feel this is one general area which we will have to improve on. If anyone has expertise or specific suggestions in this area, then please let us know.
