Thanks for turning up to ride last Saturday. 132 riders for a National event was a pleasant surprise and made Robin and Steve’s efforts in planning the course worthwhile. I was glad that we had agreed to hold the event at the end of March. If it had been the same weekend as last year we would have been up to our knees in snow (again) instead of just struggling through some glutinous mud – but the farmers might not have got round to trimming the hedges. I am never sure whether I like the Wolds or not. They are quiet but every track and minor road seems to go on for ever – and it is always windy!! Maybe I am just bitter and twisted because I was so far behind Dave Evans!!!
However, it is a different area, there was plenty of route choice and not too many gates. Unfortunately the event was spoilt by one control being stolen and two not working so it was too difficult to work out the results for the prizegiving. Congratulations to the class winners, there was some impressive scoring. Prizes can be collected at Langdale Forest or Derwent Reservoir for winners in all classes plus 2nd and 3rd in A, C and E.
I would like to thank the usual band of volunteers who ran the event cheerfully especially the control collectors who, nearly all, got back just before dark but in pretty foul weather. I would also like to thank Colin Prestwich and Steve Crane who helped Andy Conn after a nasty fall.
I have got some lost property – a pair of gloves and a pair of glasses. Please get in touch if they are yours.
The next NYMBO event is at Langdale Forest on April 29th so entries to Sue Adams as usual.
The first summer evening event is at West Tanfiled on May 11th so email entries to me.
There will be an MBO Lanequest planned by Roger Shicluna at the JK at Boston Spa over Easter weekend. Map packs from enquiries on Friday 12am-8pm, Saturday 4pm-8pm and Sunday 5pm-8pm. Cost £2 per map and start when you like.
Don’t forget the new MTBO series with events in North Yorkshire on April 22nd/23rd at Bishopwood and Gilling. Entries to ukmtboleague@ntlworld.com
A couple of corrections to the NYMBO league events. The grid reference for Langdale Forest should be SE939913 and the Catterick event in May will have a 3 hour time limit.
If you can’t download any of the files the details, results and split times of all our MBO events are on the TCA and Ebor web pages www.trailquest.co.uk www.eborienteers.org.uk
Please let me know if there are any errors in the results or if you want your details removing from this mailing list.
Cheers
Steve
We hope that you had as much fun competing in the event as we had planning it over the winter. The wet and cold weather in the weeks before the event meant that the usually fast bridleways were very tough going; we hope that you return to the area in the summer for a faster blast around.
Our aim was to set a course that spread over a large area and so ensuring that all riders had to think about their overall route. It was therefore gratifying to see that of the top ten scores of 295+ the riders chose six different routes over the first two control points!
Most competitors followed a route out based on the old railway line – normally pretty fast but on the day “like constant uphill”. However the highest score achieved by James Taylor took him through the hillier North West of the course – a route favoured by about a third of the entrants.
Apart from the two obvious options of going north west for the high scores (but very tough terrain), or along the railway eastwards, a number of riders decided to try going up the middle to collect some well spaced out controls but with the benefit of mainly hard roads. Those who didn’t notice the strong back wind going out from the start, paid a heavy price when they turned to discover they faced a hard slog back over the seemingly endless Wolds' roads.
We were impressed by the high scores returned on a large area in wet conditions and hope to see you all again over the summer. Nobody visited all of the checkpoints, so to see the ones you missed, revisit the ones you went to or see where 23 should have been visit

where we’ve placed a picture of each checkpoint plus some random shots of the snowy Wolds.
Finally thanks to Market Weighton School for providing the facilities and Steve Willis and helpers who ensured another smoothly run event.
Extra bits
If you fancy something different, Pete & Helen Laundon are running Mountain Bike Leaders course in June in the Alps so visit http://www.alpsun.com/mtbweek.htm
Dave & Helen Palmer have an apartment in Samoens so for up to date availability and more information check out www.holiday-rentals.co.uk
Our apartment is still available in the summer
There is an unpleasant virus doing the rounds which is usually titled ‘invitation’. It has an Olympic theme but don’t open it!!
