The initial problem I had was ensuring the longer courses did not have too much climb; this I eventually achieved by directing the courses in certain directions. This did lead to a lot of path running. I hope this did not spoil everybody's fun.
I also had problems trying to get a white course short and safe enough around the lake. This got worse when after some rain I found one path looked more like the lake. I wish to thank the controller, Jeff Harris, who came up with a new white course and also to the night event organiser and planner who built the bridge across the stream.
This was my first attempt at planning an event and I hope that you all enjoyed the day. Finally I would like to thank Roger Smith and Steve and Linda Whitehead who helped put out controls on Sunday morning and to Jeff Harris, Peter O'Connell and Andy Redfearn who helped collect them back in after the event.
After struggling at first to keep the White course on paths that wouldn't have youngsters disappearing up to their knees in mud and trying to add more route choice on the longer courses, the final courses turned out fine and the results show the finish times to be within those recommended in the guidelines.
I think Mark deserves congratulating for his first attempt at planning. From the comments on the day most of the competitors agree.
Thanks to Dawn, Peter and the rest of the EBOR helpers for the organisation, the weather was fine on the day which always helps at any event, however two weeks before the event there was 7-10 cm of snow at the top of the wood and things haven't been much better since.
With all the recent talk of falling competitor numbers at events it was nice to see such a good turnout (250); thank you all for coming and making all our efforts worthwhile.
Our thanks must go to the members of EBOR who volunteered to help and ensured a smooth running event on the day. The fine weather played a major part and contributed to a relaxed occasion. Apologies for underestimating the amount of linear parking needed, which necessitated longer than planned walks for some competitors, Thank you for your tolerance.
We are also indebted to Dennis Hooton and Peter Bean (Equipment Officer) who provided excellent support running up to the event and made our job easier.
Our thanks also extend to Ampleforth College in providing the permission to use the Woods and the toilets at Redcar Farm.
