The 2000/2001 Schools' League will run from October 2000 through to May 2001. There are a few changes this year that I hope will encourage even more juniors to take part.
Firstly the league is now open to schools in the EBOR, HALO and CLARO areas. By widening the area we will hopefully have more juniors eligible to compete and more events at which to run the Schools' League. I am aiming to increase the number of events significantly this year, in order to give more choice and to enable schools to compete on a regional basis, if they wish, as I am conscious that travelling long distances can be a disincentive for schools.
I am aiming to include 12 events in the schools' league this year, spread across the three club areas. Out of the 12 events a junior's best 4 scores will count towards their final total. This will enable schools to compete without having to participate in every event. Thus they can choose to concentrate on events near to them and miss events which fall in half terms or inconveniently close together, yet still record four scores. Alternatively, more ambitious schools can take part regularly throughout the league season.
The dates for the remainder of the autumn term 2000 are definite but at present the dates and places of events in 2001 are provisional.

The league is open to all juniors attending schools and colleges in the EBOR, HALO and CLARO regions. Juniors do not have to be part of an 'official' school team to take part. All juniors are eligible, but it would be nice if the juniors were competing as part of a school group, so do encourage as many juniors as possible in your school to come, and build up a school squad.
Obtain details of the events you wish to attend from the list below and turn up on the day. Typically registration is from 10:30 am to 12:30 am. At the event each junior should choose an appropriate course and enter in the usual way. However when registering each junior must give their full name (first name and surname) and put down the name of their school and the year group they are in this academic year. At some events the juniors' times may count towards other competitions, like their own club's league. Therefore it might be wise to put down BOF ages and the club name as well. Having registered and obtained a start time go through the normal starting procedure. There will be experienced adults available to give advice if needed.
Each junior's best 4 scores from the 12 events will count. A junior's score will depend on the colour of the course they have entered and how close to the winner's time they came:
So, points scored =
| winner's time | x | colour course factor |
| your time |
| Colour | Max Score |
|---|---|
| Brown | 1000 |
| Blue | 900 |
| Green | 800 |
| Light Green | 700 |
| Red | 600 |
| Orange | 500 |
| Yellow | 350 |
| White | 200 |
As you can see, the harder course that is run, the greater the number of points that can be scored. But the closer a junior's time is to the winner's time for that course, the more points they will score! So choosing the best course is important. As juniors become more proficient they can move onto the next colour up to see if they can gain even more points. Hopefully as the season progresses and experience is gained, individual scores will improve. Discussing which course to run with teachers or parents is a good idea for new starters.
As soon as possible after each event, results will be displayed on the Ebor website - www.eborienteers.org.uk. Up to date results will also be displayed at the events.
Boys and Girls will compete in separate individual classes, grouped by key stage. The first three in each class will receive prizes at the end of the season. There will also be an overall school competition at each key stage. Since every junior who competes for a school counts towards the school's overall score, the more juniors who get involved, the better the school will do. A large group of less experienced orienteers, by becoming enthusiastic and attending events regularly, can outscore a small group of experienced orienteers. Our aim is to encourage as many juniors as possible to join in.
The prize giving is scheduled to take place at the Yorkshire Schools' Championships towards the end of June2001.
