| Schools' Orienteering in Yorkshire |
This year's league runs from September 2001 to May 2002 and together
with other orienteering events aimed at children, will provide the opportunity
for regular orienteering through the school year.
The initial list of this
year's events is as follows:
| Date | Venue | Club |
| 23.09.01 | Beverley Westwood | HALO |
| 30.09.01 | Harlow Hill | CLARO |
| 28.10.01 | Wheldrake | EBOR |
| 25.11.01 | Brimham Rocks | CLARO |
Further events will be added to the list as they become available through the year.
It should be noted that the dates for Wheldrake and Brimham are
provisional at this stage. Details of the individual events can be obtained
from literature distributed at earlier events or from the websites run by the
three clubs, EBOR, HALO and CLARO.
There is no need to inform anyone of
your intention to take part before an event unless you have a large group (over
10 children), in which case it is wise to let the event organiser know you are
coming.
While there will be twelve events scheduled through the year it is
not necessary to attend them all. The scoring system only counts each pupil's
best four scores. Consequently the more events that are attended, the more
experienced pupils will become, and hopefully the higher scores they will
achieve. It is only necessary to attend four events as a minimum. This will
allow schools to stick to events in their region if transport is a problem.
At an orienteering event there are a variety of courses and each one is defined by a colour. White is the easiest course for younger juniors who are just starting while Brown is the hardest course and is appropriate for very experienced orienteers. The number of points that are scored depends on both how hard the course is and how fast the pupil runs it compared to the winner's time. Each pupil's score is worked out as follows:
| Score = | Course Colour Factor x Winner's Time |
| Your Time |
The Colour Factors are as follows:
| Brown | 1000 |
| Blue | 900 |
| Green | 800 |
| Light Green | 700 |
| Red | 600 |
| Orange | 500 |
| Yellow | 350 |
| White | 200 |
The right choice of course is very important!
Each junior's best 4 scores from the 12 events will count to their overall score for the year.
There are two league competitions: An individual competition with separate classes for boys and girls. This runs in Key stage categories with the first three in each category receiving medals. There is also an overall school competition, again split into Key stages, where all competing pupils' scores count towards their own school's total. This encourages as many members as possible from a school to take part. The prize giving will take place at the Yorkshire Schools' Championships next year.
Obtain details of the events you wish to attend from the list below and turn up on the day. Typically registration is from 10:30 am to 12:30 am. At the event each junior should choose an appropriate course and enter in the usual way. However when registering each junior must give their full name (first name and surname) and put down the name of their school and the year group they are in this academic year. At some events the juniors' times may count towards other competitions, like their own club's league. Therefore it might be wise to put down BOF ages and the club name as well. Having registered and obtained a start time go through the normal starting procedure. There will be experienced adults available to give advice if needed.
As soon as possible after each event, results will be displayed on the Ebor and Halo websites enabling all pupils to follow their own progress. Up to date results will also be displayed at events through the season
