EBORIENTEERS are delighted to invite you to The White Rose Orienteering Weekend 2008 - one of the longest established and most popular orienteering holiday breaks which offers three days of varied orienteering on excellent North Yorkshire terrain in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
The weekend includes various orienteering competitions including Regional Events on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August, a night score event on Saturday evening and, on Monday 25th August, a fast and furious team relay and a mountain bike score event.
The weekend will be held in the south east corner of the North York Moors park, just W of the village of Harwood Dale, 12km NW of Scarborough. The assembly, parking and campsite will be in Low North Park – a former military camp, but now used for motor cycling trials by Scarborough & District Motor Club, which owns the complex and has kindly agreed to its use for White Rose 2008.
The event will be signed from the A170 at East Ayton, itself easily accessible from the A64 York to Scarborough road.
The nearest public transport to the area is Arriva route 93 (Scarborough – Whitby) which stops at the junction of the A171 Scarborough to Whitby road and Helwath Road – 5.4km from the event.
Countryside Bus Company operates a limited “demand responsive” service to Harwood Dale from Scarborough (tel: 01723-870790).
The fee for parking will be £1.00 per vehicle per day, however campsite users have parking for the entire weekend included in their pitch fee. For day visitors parking fees will be collected daily on arrival.
Dogs will be permitted in the car park, assembly and campsite field only, and must be kept on a lead. Dogs may not be taken on courses.
Langdale Forest, Barns Cliff and Low North Park, together with Broxa Forest and the deep river gorge of the infant Derwent, offer excellent orienteering terrain.
Langdale Forest, a large, mainly coniferous forest of several thousand hectares lies on the southern edge of the North York Moors SSSI. Now widely used for recreational as well as forestry purposes, it provides excellent O terrain for Saturday’s regional event. Several deep valleys cut into the forest including Woof Howe Grain and Hipperley Beck. Between Hipperley Beck and the Derwent Gorge is the bare topped hill of Langdale Rigg with its trig point at the 244m summit.
SE of Langdale Forest, and across the river, steep slopes rise to the the wooded plateau of Broxa Forest. The forest falls sharply away to the W down the 125m steep scarp of Barns Cliff to the narrow Derwent gorge as it starts it’s remarkable 150km long journey from its source just N of Low North Park (and only 10km from the North Sea) to its final estuary in the Humber after converging with the Ouse.
Lownorth Beck lies to the N of Broxa Moor and forms the S boundary of the old military camp of Low North Park, a small but complex area now mainly used for motor cycle racing – although not during White Rose 2008!. We will have exclusive use of this secluded and attractive area for the assembly and campsite at White Rose 2008 – an excellent base for what we hope will be an excellent weekend.
For all events (except MTBO) the map scale will be 1:10,000 resurveyed and updated for White Rose 2008. All maps will be waterproof paper and overprinted . Any special information will be included with the final details.
Long and short courses will be available for all senior age classes from M/W21 to M/W75. We will also provide very short courses for M21 and W21. All senior courses will be planned to technical level 5. Junior courses will be planned in accordance with non-age class arrangements with courses as follows JM1, JW1, JM2, JW2, JM3, JW3, JM4, JW4, JM5L, JM5M, JM5S, JW5L, JW5S. Courses for these junior courses will be planned according to BOF guidelines.
SportIdent Electronic Punching is being used throughout the weekend. SI "cards" can be hired for the duration of the weekend.
You cannot run a novice or colour coded event, or shadow a junior before you run a regional event course. Anyone doing so will become non-competitive for their regional event course.
Colour coded courses (Red, Yellow and White) will be available for novices on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August.
A free picture string course will be provided for young children on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August.
For the fourth year running, there will be a Team score event on Monday 25th August. On courses A, B and C, all three members of the team will start at the same time and will decide who will visit which controls. The objective being to collect the maximum number of points between the three members of the team within a defined period of time. There will be three senior courses (A, B and C) and a junior course (D). See below for details.
In course D, for the youngest juniors, the three runners will all start together, but there will be defined cross-country courses for each runner rather than a score competition.
| Class A | Open; 120+; All W; at least 1 W; Ad Hoc |
| Class B | 120+; All W, 160+, Family (2 parents) |
| Class C | 48-; 48- all W; Family (1 parent) |
| Class D | M/W12- |
After its success last year, White Rose 2008 will again include an informal night score event on the Saturday evening. With mass start at 21:00 hrs, a 30 minute score competition will provide an opportunity to experience the forest at night. Although there will be just one score course, we will offer prizes to runners in up to ten competitive classes.
A two hour score event will be provided (one hour for novices) on Monday 25th August. Normal orienteering kites and SI punching will be used. The terrain used for this event will be larger than used for the foot-O and will use an overprinted 1:25000 map. The MTBO event at the White Rose is provided by North Yorkshire Mountain Bike Orienteers. (Flyer - DOC / PDF) Foot-O competitors that want to try the MTBO event can hire mountain bikes locally from various locations.
The assembly area is expected to be a large secluded grass field, away from the road and close to the competition area. This means that (if possible) regional event courses will finish in or very close to the assembly area – check final details later for information about facilities for Club tents along the run-in. The assembly area will be large enough to provide a large exclusive orienteering campsite, separate parking for day visitors and O traders, including Wilf’s Café and Ultrasport.
