York Area Schools Orienteering Summer League - 2006

Each summer the local orienteering club, Eborienteers, run a summer league for primary and secondary school children. This is the 8th year that the league has been in operation. Last year over 200 school children took part. The idea of the league is to introduce children to the sport of orienteering and provide an opportunity for children to experience 'proper' orienteering in an environment outside their own school grounds.

Schools may wish to try out orienteering by coming to a single event or they may wish to compete against other schools in the league by taking part in at least 3 events.

No previous experience is required and we aim to have adults on hand to provide support and tuition for those new to the sport. However those children who have tried orienteering before in their school grounds with have the opportunity to build on their skills. The format of the events is such that both beginners and children with some previous experience should be able to learn and gain a sense of achievement. New starters are welcome to participate in pairs.

All planning and organising of these events is done by Eborienteers.

Event Details

• Start times 4:15 to 5:15pm.
• You will need to arrive about 15 mins before your first start time to organise the children with their control cards etc
• Objective: visit as many of the 20 controls as possible within the time limit to get the best score (max 300)
• Time limit 40 mins. Penalties for being late back - 5 points deducted per minute.
• Controls which are further away or are harder to find will be worth more points.
• Entry fee £1 per child, whether solo or in pairs. (Every child will have their own specially prepared map.)
• Children should come dressed to run. A tracksuit is ideal.
• Suitable for both boys and girls.
• Compasses can be useful but only for those who have been trained to use them.
• Teachers may accompany pupils, for training purposes, but the scores must then be declared "non-competitive".
• The Schools Event is followed by an Adults Event including 10 more difficult controls. Any adults associated with school groups are welcome to participate. (Starts from 5:30 - 7:00 pm)

Schools' League Details

• There are both individual and team (school) competitions in different age-groups
• Each child's best 3 results from the 6 events are added to give their league score
• Results and league positions will be published on the Eborienteers website, www.eborienteers.org.uk.
