Bishopwood Night Event 2026
YHOA Night League

Race Sign Up.png

Due to the event taking place in winter, when we can expect wet and muddy

or snowy/icy conditions at short notice, it is extremely important that all

competitors follow the instructions given below. These are liable to change

at short notice and will be updated as necessary. In the event of extremely

adverse conditions a decision on calling off the event will be made at 10am

on Saturday 17 January. It is therefore essential that all competitors

check the Eborienteers website before setting off to the event.

Location & Access

Bishop Wood North

Access signed off B1222 Bishopdyke Road between Sherburn-in-Elmet & Cawood.

Grid reference = SE551348

what3words = stiffly.basket.mute

Nearest post code = LS25 6HJ (this will take you to the village of Biggin, not the forest entrance)

Parking

Please note there will be no parking marshals on the night.

Parking will be on the side of a forest track that heads downhill and runs parallel with the main road. There is a turning head at the end before the track bends left (don’t turn left into the assembly area). Turning round before you park (to face the way you have come) is recommended if no other vehicles are on the track. If you are on the track when a car is turning round then either park up facing down the track or please wait for it to come back up the track and park before heading down to turn around.

The track will accommodate cars and VW type campers but nothing bigger. There is some room at the mouth of the entrance for 2-3 larger vehicles if parked sensibly.

Assembly (area open from 4.30pm)

The assembly area is approximately 50m from the end of the turning head (a maximum of 400m from the main road junction along the parking track).

The start will be less than 50m from assembly and the finish about 200m from it.

Please note there will be no portaloo at this event

Competition Notes

First Start = 5.15pm (subject to levels of darkness).

Thereafter at 1 minute intervals

Last Start = 6pm

Courses close 7.45pm (or when last runner is home)

All runners should report in and download before leaving the wood (even if retiring or timed out).

YHOA night league rules apply.

Full leg and arm cover plus a whistle are required. Cagoules will be compulsory in the event of bad weather. Competitors should be aware of the temperature and possible weather at a night event in mid-January and dress accordingly.

It’s a popular dog walking area hence dogs are welcome but they should be on a lead in registration, parking and assembly areas. Please pick up all poo (the assembly area is used by children for forest school).

Newly updated at the end of 2025 by Paul Taylor.

The short course will use features that are a little way off the tracks (some of which are unclear on the ground due to leaf cover).

The very short course will be non-competitive and will stick to forest tracks.

Terrain

Bishop Wood is dead flat terrain with a mixture of woodland density and undergrowth and the courses have been designed to make the best of it. Nevertheless, brambles will be encountered on some legs and were a problem for some at our last event in the wood. Gaiters are advised. The main features comprise tracks/paths and drainage ditches (some deep and water filled). There are many earth bridges over the ditches, which are quite subtle on the ground.

Safety Notes

There will be a first aid kit and defibrillator located at assembly. Andrew McRoyall will be the first aider.

See earlier notes about clothing, whistles and reporting to download. A spare torch is recommended.

Emergency EBOR contact number on the night will be 07825 892343
